Cattaraugus County was awarded funding through the New York State Department of State Brownfield Opportunity Area BOA) Program to undertake countywide planning effort focused on the identification, inventory, and analysis of brownfield-affected areas.
What is a Brownfield?
Brownfields are property that is abandoned, unused, or underused due to known or suspected contamination that complicates redevelopment. Examples of brownfields include abandoned industrial and commercial properties; former dry cleaners; old railyards; salvage yards and dump sites; former gas stations or auto-related businesses; and dilapidated buildings.

BOA Program
A BOA is a specified area with a cluster of brownfields, usually in distressed area, that forms the basis of the BOA community planning process.
The Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) Program provides communities with funding and technical assistance to develop community-driven, area-wide plans to effectively redevelop brownfields and other vacant, abandoned and underutilized property. BOA takes a comprehensive approach to redeveloping brownfields by identifying redevelopment opportunities for individual sites as well as surrounding areas, thus maximizing the impacts of revitalization.

It can help unlock potential in a community. Transforming burdens into assets by assessing opportunities within identified underutilized spaces.
It can help build a consensus. Encouraging towns to establish a shared vision between community members and local government for the future of identified areas.
