The Jury Commissioner's Office operates within Cattaraugus County but comes under the auspices of the State of New York Judicial System. The Jury Commissioner's Office is in the Cattaraugus County Center in Little Valley, New York, and is staffed by the Commissioner of Jurors and a Jury Analyst.
The mission of the Jury Commissioner's Office is to supply qualified and impartial jurors for Supreme and County Courts, Grand Jury, and Surrogate's Court when necessary. The Office also supplies qualified and impartial jurors to the two cities and 32 towns in Cattaraugus County for use in their Courts.
Juror questionnaires are continually mailed out to keep juror records current, as well as keeping the necessary number of qualified jurors in the jury pool to supply the Courts when needed. Once a juror is summoned and reports for service, (s)he is not eligible to serve again for at least six years. All jurors are given the choice to volunteer for service earlier than six years, if they desire.
New York State selects jurors randomly by combining lists from five major state agencies, including tax filers, driver/ID holders (DMV), registered voters, unemployment insurance recipients, and social services recipients. These names are merged into a Jury Pool, and potential jurors are selected by computer and mailed a qualification questionnaire to confirm eligibility. In order to serve as a qualified Juror, you MUST meet the following qualifications: You must be age 18 or older; you must be a resident of Cattaraugus County, and a United States citizen; you must be able to read, understand, and communicate in the English language; you must have never been convicted of a felony; and you must not have served jury duty at any time during the last six years. If you have served within that time frame, you must provide either proof of service, or the date and court location that you served to be excused.
Please contact the Jury Commissioner's Office, if you have any questions concerning jury service.
